DuB TheorY

DuB TheorY formed in late 1999 and has since produced some of the best dub-house in the World. Members Ivan-I and Fionn Starchyld, of San Francisco, joined forces as they shared a mutual admiration and passion for the music they were exploring. This music evolved into a desire to hear their own tunes thundering from the sound systems around the globe. Together, their deep love for music has allowed them to explore dub influenced tribal beats for the dance music community...DuB TheorY has continued to construct an innovative style with a dedication to creating quality dance music with depth.

A native of San Francisco, California, Ivan-I discovered house music in 1991 while going to underground warehouse parties where he would hear DJs like Doc Martin, Garth, Jeno, DJ Dan, Carlos and Tony who inspired him to start Djing, which he did in 1993. Meanwhile, Starchyld, while attending the same high school, knew Ivan through the years, yet ran in a different scene. A rocker at heart, he played drums for various bands throughout those early years and eventually took up singing.

It wasn’t until college that the two began to hang together and Ivan introduced Starchyld to the electronic music scene he had been exploring. Although they DJ’d together for a few years, Starchyld realized that it did not give him the creative outlet he was looking for; he switched his focus to studio work. Ivan-I kept at it, though, and he started spinning out at small parties in the City. Over the years the parties grew, as did his following and now he has since played for some of the best underground parties around town. He has thrown down on turntables throughout the U.S. as well as Canada and Brazil. Ivan has created a signature sound that has gained him the respect and admiration of his peers. Look for him to lay down a heavy deep dubby tribal house set like no other... truly spiritual!

While Ivan-I was perfecting his skills on the decks, Starchyld was studying the ins and outs of studio recording. From college courses and then interning and eventually engineering for Jake and the Phatman productions, Starchyld began working with acts like Dawn Robinson from En Vogue and Raphael Sadique from Toni! Tony! Tone! and was thrust into the professional world of recording. He was finally able to start refining his own production skills. As Jake and the Phatman moved their production team to LA, Starchyld decided that his label and home town of SF was more important than the opportunity down south. It was around this time that he decided to join up with Ivan-I and Mike Tea to start Jah Love Recordings. To further their knowledge of the industry Ivan started working for Imperial Dub Recordings as well as San Francisco’s first dance music store, "BPM Music Factory" while Starchyld started assisting at Sy Klopps studios with recording and editing work.

In these past three years since Jah Love’s creation, the demand for both Jah Love and DuB TheorY material has soared with no letting up in sight. With a busy production schedule for the label and the duo, there are a lot of exciting things in the works for the early part 2003. Upcoming releases from DuB TheorY include Trojan, Echelon, Jah Love and Leaf Recordings. Jah Love upcoming releases include remixes by DJ Buck and Jay Tripwire of a new DuB TheorY original track, “Soundbuoy”. Also keep an eye out for the first Jah Love mix CD: due in mid 2003.
